Money Management in Trading Systems

By Maclin Vestor

How to manage money when buying stocks, futures, or options -- what you must know before you buy.

Many people have a very crucial problem, they take on more risk than they can. It really doesn't matter if you're very young, if you take risk to the extreme and continue down that path, you will by mathematical law in all probability lose money.

Lets say you had an almost sure investment that was 85% likely to succeed. When it succeeded you double your money. You put all your money on it. The problem is, when the investment fails, you lose everything. Now it is just a fact that you will eventually lose everything if you continue to invest everything. You only need one trade and you are wiped out completely. Now, even if you invested 90% of your money on an investment that would win 80% of the time, you still are taking on too much risk to win in the long run. If you lose once, you will need a 1000% return just to get back to even. That simply will not happen forever, and even if it did, the large loss would limit your potential for gain so much, that you'd be better off not taking on the maximum risk.

Now, your risk of losing everything can never be completely 100% eliminated, even with conservative strategies. If you flip enough coins, eventually you'll get a very rare event such as 100 heads in a row. However, you'll also get 100 tails in a row. The idea is that you have a strategy that yields you more when you win, and/or wins more than it loses. in this case there will be several losses in a row, but there will also be several wins in a row. If you manage your money properly, you will still have enough money if you get several losses in a row, to be able to more than make up for it when you get several wins in a row. If you are forced to limit the amount of capital after so many losses, that you cannot invest with the same amount after the losses, you may be unable to win enough to make up for those losses. The idea is to keep your investments small enough to limit the chances of that happening. Although almost nothing is a sure thing, by using proper money management, you tip the odds in your favor.

Even if you have a profitable method, if you do not manage your risk, your profitable method becomes unprofitable. It's not usually the investment vehicle, it's the investor that ultimately determines how quickly you fail, and ultimately whether you are able to succeed. Under the same context, it's not usually the type of car, but the driver that determines whether you cause an accident. In order to protect yourself, you must keep your positions at a manageable level, and make sure to keep yourself limited by these rules that will limit your risk of ruin and keep the odds in your favor so you can stay in the game.

So how exactly does one manage money in a trading system? You need to determine probability of a move taking place. If you buy OTM option, the stock will have to move larger for success to occur. Of course if it does, the reward will be greater. There are probability curves based on a random walk theory that will assist you in determining the probability of a move taking place, until you know any better, use these. However, you also should use your own records of your system Determine both your risk/reward (your average % win divided by your average percentage losses, and in addition figure out your likelihood of success. When you do this, you can use what's known as the Kelly Criterion By using the formula as follows Kelly % = W - [(1 - W) / R] Kelly % = The maximum percentage of your capital you should invest per position. W = Winning probability R = Win/loss ratio

A trading system that contains good money management rules will not only outperform one without, but it will also help protect your capital, and keep you in the game. - 23162

Trading Spot Forex - The Advantages

By Jane MacRae

Trading spot forex is actually trading in the world's currencies. The principle behind it is simply - you purchase one currency when it is low and sell another when it is high. And, you make a profit with the balance.

Spot forex trading has become more and more popular amongst all types of investment options out there. Many people, even those who are new to investing, find that forex trading is a better choice for them than playing in the stock market or futures market, and there are good reasons for that.

* More Affordable Capital Requirement

Unlike other forms of investing, where it seems like you already have to have hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest if you want to have any hope of making a profit, trading spot forex is accessible to smaller, individual investors.

There was a time in the past when forex market was dominated by large multinational banks and major financial institutions. In that climate, it is easy to see why smaller investors did not feel they could even begin to compete.

Over the years, however, this situation has changed. Now, almost anyone with any amount of capital can enter the forex market. You simply play with whatever amount you feel comfortable.

* Easy to Operate

It is hard to find out exactly for how long forex trading has been around. Due to its long history, the practice in the forex market is very much standardized by now. This, together the modern technologies available to investors today, has made the operation of forex trading very easy to learn and use. WIth an automated trading system, you can constantly monitor the market, make quick transactions and get complete stats any time you like. Whether you are eating, sleeping, or running errands, you can still be making money.

* An Exciting Market

The forex market only takes short breaks and is live 24 hours a days and 5 days a week. There is always something happening, and new money-making opportunities and systems never cease to turn up. In this exciting market, you can hardly stay inactive. You should keep in mind, though, focusing is just as important to your success as being responsive to new events.

* Affordable Cost

In additional to the more affordable starting capital requirement, the transaction fee for forex trading also tens to be lower compared to stock trading. This is also the case for charges by forex brokers.

As you can see, trading spot forex has many advantages, and these advantages have led to its increasing popularity. Regardless of how much you are willing to invest and regardless of whether you have any prior experience, you have a good chance of success in this huge market. - 23162

CFD Trading Strategy - Symmetrical Triangles Downside Breakout

By Jeff Cartridge

Symmetrical triangles have been very popular with traders over the years trading the chart pattern when it breaks out in either direction. A symmetrical triangle is defined by two lines, one on the upper boundary of the price movement which slopes down and one on the lower side which slopes up. The lines have almost the same angle, hence the name symmetrical.

Symmetrical Triangles, Not Usually Traded Short

The symmetrical triangle can be traded both long and short and when it does break down, historically 45% of the time, it can be profitable. A symmetrical triangle breakout to the downside is not as reliable as a breakout to the upside with only 44% of the trades being profitable. The average profits are just 0.33% in 9 days.

Improve Your Trades

As you would expect a break to the downside works better in a falling sector and market environment. By using filters that require the market, stock and the sector to be in a consolidation or a down trend you can improve the results.

A breakout from a symmetrical triangle is best if it occurs later in the pattern, but not near the start. The best trades occur when a down side break occurs after the stock bounces off the lower boundary and drops back before hitting the upper boundary.

If volume supports a symmetrical triangle breakout then the profitability of the trades improves. For volume to support the breakout, volume when the stock is going down should be greater than volume when the stock is going up. A close lower than the previous day, before the breakout, results in better trades.

Short Trading Symmetrical Triangles Can Be Profitable

Following a series of simple rules to determine which symmetrical triangle to trade can improve results dramatically. By applying these filters symmetrical triangles are profitable on 47% of the trades and return an average of 1.58% per trade in 9 days. This is a profitable pattern to trade.

Forex Training: The Key To Success

By Jacob Tremblay

Forex trading is just like anything else in life - to get good at it, all you need is practice. Of course, sometimes you don't have the time (or the money!) to get the practice you need. In that case, the only thing to do is to get some proper training. If you can find someone to teach you the system, or a good quality forex robot with lots of information and advice, you can ramp up your skills in an incredible amount of time.

So, how do you find the training you need? The answer is, that there is no one good answer. There are literally millions of sources of information, from books, to articles, to video courses and seminars... different people learn in different ways, and it's up to you to find out what works best. My advice, is to practice something I like to call "information overload".

If you just want some quick and easy success, you can buy a Forex robot to automate the system for you. And sure, that will work, but it's not nearly as good as putting the time and effort into becoming an expert. It all depends on whether you're willing to commit the time to achieve true mastery. If you are, then information overload may be for you. On the surface, it seems a simple enough technique, but when practiced regularly it will allow you to become and expert in any field you wish - including Forex trading.

The first step in information overloading is to find an initial source. So head down to your nearest library, and find the shelves with the Forex training books. I'm sure there are some. Once you've found them, just close your eyes and pick one randomly - that's your first information source. Go check it out.

Ok, now you've got your first information source - time to start overloading it. I want you to take this book, and keep it with you. Constantly, everywhere you go, and whenever you have the time, read a little bit. Even if you only read a couple of lines, you're still working through it. Read it in your lunch break. Read it on the bus. Read it before bed - especially before bed.

This is because whatever you are thinking of last thing at night, is what your mind remembers most strongly. So when you're trying to learn about something, falling asleep thinking about it helps hugely. The purpose of this is not to study the book. Don't worry if you don't understand it, or if you don't get something. Just shrug your shoulders and keep going. The important thing is to get as much information into your mind as possible.

When you finish that book, you can just go back and pick a new one and do it again. Keep going, until you've got enough info in there. You'll find that, once you've passed enough information through your brain, it starts getting overloaded, and things start coming back out. You'll find your mind wanders back to the things you've read, and information you weren't consciously aware of becomes available - maybe you see a chart, and suddenly realize you know what it all means. Don't worry, this is completely normal - you're doing great.

The second half of the process is to find a study guide book. Head back to the library, and this time try reading some of those Forex training books. You'll be amazed at how much you already know, without even putting any work into learning it. Let your instincts guide you here, and pick out a book that you think looks good, to really learn from.

By now your brain is full of information about Forex, and all you're doing is awakening it. So go through the book, studying it carefully. This time, when you see something you don't understand, investigate it - find another book, look online, whatever. As you study, everything you already know subconsciously will fall into place, allowing you to go through the book with an ease you've probably never know before.

So you now have all the tools you need to become a master Forex trader. All that's lacking is practice - for that, I suggest you pick up a Forex software package. You need to get experience somehow, and most software packages will give you the tools you need to really come to grips with the material. In the end of course, the human mind is an amazing thing - and you have everything you need right there.

Here's to your success! - 23162
